A good board member is a team player who contributes to the organization's mission and doesn't need to be a star. They are also a strategic thinker. Attitude is equally important to background or expertise. Attitudes that lead to success as volunteer board members are based upon awareness of the importance of cooperation and the need to set goals for the organization. Commitment is the most important aspect. Often, people don’t realize just how time-consuming sitting on a board can be. We want engaged members who can be available for committee meetings, necessary training, strategy and planning days and organization events. Attend fundraising events, networking, act as an ambassador for the organization and build sustainable relationships, not just with fellow board directors, but with the stakeholders, investors, management team and donors.
This workload can be manageable, even if you have a day job. But you have to first decide whether you’re committed; because if you’re not, it will soon show.
