Spectrum is always grateful to work with Junior interns from Gwinnett School for Math, Science and Technology (GSMST). Thank you to Nishka Soni, Theresa Nguyen, Grace Chao, and Jeni Lee for their amazing service to Spectrum as interns this summer.
Nishka says...
I am currently an intern at Spectrum’s summer camp. Throughout my camp experiences, I have truly enjoyed getting to interact with the kids in various fun-filled activities such as outdoor activities, water play, and craft-making. I have also enjoyed meeting a lot of new people and learning about helping people with autism. I am grateful for this opportunity to make a difference in kids’ lives and to positively contribute to the community!

Never a dull moment. This is my mindset walking into Spectrum everyday. The kids keep me active and occupy me as their smiles and laughter make my day full of happiness. I learned how unique the world is; each child brings in something different, an indescribable speechless spark. A vibe that I’ve never felt, they are born with a special talent to surround others with their joy and positivity. They fulfill my dreams of being able to be around and help kids as well as thickening my love for children. What I most importantly get from this internship is unforgettable memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. Always remembered.

Hello! I'm Grace Shao and I'm going to be a rising junior at GSMST. I wanted to intern with SPECTRUM because I've never experienced being with kids that had autism and I wanted to have a first hand experience taking care of kids. During my experiences with the summer camp, I do have to say that taking care of the summer camp kids has really warmed my heart and I love the environment that I get to be a part of. The awesome staff and the energetic and kind kids definitely makes me want to intern again! Thanks for giving me this opportunity to give back to the community and the fun kids.

Although I've had to work from home throughout my internship, I'm incredibly happy that I am able to give back to the community and help those around me. I personally find it really important that Spectrum holds ideals that highlight the need for education and support for individuals and families/friends affected by autism spectrum disorder, especially because the worrisome state of the world has made things even more difficult to manage. As someone who has struggled with mental health in the past, as well as someone with multiple friends affected by ASD, I am very passionate about helping others who are in similar situations: making people feel happy and comfortable regardless of what they're going through has always been my life goal, and so it is such a wonderful experience being able to plan out activities and events for those at Spectrum.
